Employment security
Employment security where you rely on a large organisation for a long career is something of the past. The world of work, as we know, it will never be the same again! Many people are forced to work as entrepreneurs because there are simply not enough formal employment available. In order to be successful a new way of thinking and managing is required. Corporate managers in well established organisations have to think and perform like entrepreneurs in order to be successful in the new business world. Business is not as usual anymore. New techniques and processes are required to deliver old style customer value.
We also have the “true” entrepreneurs. People who had an “awakening” and realised that they are entrepreneurs. There are many reasons for this. Some were forced out of the formal educational system because of “disabilities” like dyslexia. In retrospect they were lucky not to be conditioned by the formal system and developed business opportunities by thinking and doing “out of the box.” Some just see and experience the world different than most other people.
Information & knowledge
The availability of information and the new social network channels changed the way in which we live and work. Information is not available anymore to large organisations, the rich and privileged. It is available to people who know how to connect to available networks. Knowledge is the capital of the world. Those who know how to can replicate projects and successes anywhere in the world. Lifelong learning is a fact of life. But do we know exactly how people learn? Many graduates complete college and university qualifications without being really competent. Teaching and learning is not the same thing. Today there are many learning opportunities available on the internet outside of the formal educational system.
Boundaries
Boundaries according to country, region and city have shifted. By means of e-mail, the social media (Facebook & Twitter) people have associates and friends all over the world. There are many international reciprocal investments. China have massive investments and interests in the USA. Should the two mega countries become enemies a war according to the twentieth century style won’t be feasible.
Adding value
There are many examples of prosperity in the world. Obviously some of it fool’s gold. For many the only thing to chase is money. Throughout the ages we know that the financial world is driven by fear and greed. Recently we experienced scandals and greed that almost destroyed the world’s banking system. Remuneration and rewards should come as a result of value added. Trade unions are in a perpetual fight for more and some company executives reward themselves with very lucrative remuneration packages. Most entrepreneurs don’t do it for the money. Money is a result of economic activities performed for the fun and the praise and respect evoked from society.
Leadership
All the challenges and issues I have mentioned demand a new style of management and leadership. Leaders must deal with ethos, values, morality, discipline and responsibility. In this blog I want to discuss the issues that I have mentioned and also make suggestions of how to deal with some of the problems and opportunities. I hope we will create a platform where there will be some collaboration, vibrant discussion and information sharing.
